Rep. Santoni (D-Berks), Minority Chair of the House Liquor Control Committee, announced he would not be running for re-election this year.
"The past 20 years have been rewarding and I am honored that the people of Berks County placed their confidence in me and allowed me to represent them," Rep. Santoni said. "However, it is time to face new challenges."
"I have been proud to be a part of so much of the economic growth in the community, from the Reading Phillies ballpark and science center at Albright College to various economic development projects in Reading over the last two decades," Rep. Santoni said. "There always will be work to do."
Rep. Santoni was first elected to the House in 1992 and currently serves as the Democratic chairman of the House Liquor Control Committee. Previously he served as Democratic chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee and was responsible for moving legislation to expand the presence of table games in Pennsylvania casinos, "probably one of the largest projects I oversaw in my legislative career," Rep. Santoni said. "It has generated millions of dollars in state revenue and assisted in lowering or offsetting local real estate taxes throughout Pennsylvania.
"I appreciate the support of my family and neighbors," Rep. Santoni said. "My experience in the legislature has given me a perspective I plan to carry with me to life's next set of challenges."
Rep. Santoni's legislative term expires November 30 and his constituent service office will remain open and accessible through that date.
