Education Announces $2 Million For Community College Construction Projects

The Department of Education Monday announced the approval of $2 million in grants to support projects at five community colleges in Pennsylvania.
“For many Pennsylvanians, community colleges are a stepping stone to a good career or to seek higher education. This investment will allow the schools to make improvements to their facilities, so they can continue to serve students from communities across Pennsylvania,” Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera said. “These projects are critical to supporting students with the most up-to-date technology and learning environments.”
The five community colleges and their facilities improvement projects are:
-- Community College of Allegheny County, $500,000, creation of a hot site (disaster recovery service for computer/network operations)
-- Butler County Community College, $400,000, Cranberry Center renovations
-- Luzerne County Community College, $210,689, paving project
-- Montgomery County Community College, $265,700, campus safety and security upgrades
-- Westmoreland County Community College, $625,000, HVAC systems upgrades
Each community college was required to apply for the state funding for the project and must have local sponsorship to finance the remaining costs.  The colleges have an Oct. 30, 2018 deadline for completing their projects.
