LCB Reports 4.6 Percent Sales Increase In First 6 Months

The Liquor Control Board Monday announced its unaudited operating results for the first half of fiscal year 2014-15.
PLCB wine and spirits sales totaled $993.1 million for the six-month period ending Dec. 31, 2014, a 4.6 percent increase over first six months of the prior year. December sales increased nearly 7 percent year over year.
The agency set a new one-day sales record on Dec. 31, 2014, bringing in $19.3 million (excluding all taxes). The previous record was $18.5 million set on Dec. 23, 2011.
Both wine and spirits sales showed growth when compared to the same period last year. Wine sales increased by 5.4 percent, while spirits sales increased by 4.5 percent at Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores.
As a result of positive sales growth, the agency reported interim net income of $79.1 million, a 3.9 percent increase over last year, and remitted more than $247.2 million in sales and liquor tax to the Commonwealth, an increase of $10.7 million or 4.5 percent over the first six months of 2013-14.

PA Environmental Council Policy Priorities For 2015
The PA Environmental Council Friday published a list of its policy priorities for 2015 covering climate change, stronger natural gas regulation, water resource protection, a moratorium on further State Forest leasing for natural gas development, an end to sidestepping the legislative process during budget season, renewing the financial commitment to environmental programs and adoption of drinking water well standards.

PA December Unemployment Rate Down To 4.8 Percent

The Department of Labor & Industry Friday reported Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate declined by three-tenths of a percentage point in December to 4.8 percent, the Commonwealth’s lowest rate since March 2008.
This was the fourth consecutive monthly decline in the state unemployment rate and the ninth decline in 2014. Pennsylvania’s rate was eight-tenths of a percentage point below the U.S. rate of 5.6 percent. The Commonwealth’s rate was down by 2.0 percentage points from last December while the national rate declined by 1.1 points over the year.
Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force contracted slightly in December, down 1,000 to 6,367,000. Resident employment was up 13,000 while unemployment was down 14,000.
Total nonfarm jobs were up by 8,300 to 5,812,300, the highest level since June 2008. Private sector jobs rose 8,300 to a record high of 5,098,200. Within industries, the largest increase in December was 4,700 in education & health services. Construction had the largest decline, down 4,800.
Over the year, total nonfarm jobs in Pennsylvania were up 54,200 (+0.9 percent). The growth was almost entirely within private industries, with the largest gains in trade, transportation & utilities, education & health services and construction. Only two of the eleven supersectors declined from last December – information and government.
